Padel in New Orleans: A New Era for Louisiana’s Sports Scene

On National Pickleball Day, AJ and I had a whirlwind of activities. We attended the NOLA Picklefest and celebrated The Exchange’s one-year anniversary. We also enjoyed a lively gathering at Pickle N Pins. Playing both pickleball and Padel in New Orleans on the same day was incredible. We were surrounded by friends and the infectious energy of this growing sports community.

Exploring the Drew Brees NOLA Picklefest

Yesterday kicked off the Drew Brees NOLA Picklefest at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. This year, the event is in a different hall, which received mixed feedback from participants. The new layout makes finding courts easier, but the lighting is worse than last year. The tournament still uses Pickleroll courts, and players noticed more dead spots. These dead spots come from electrical covers and the seams of the Pickleroll courts.

The tournament supports the Brees Dream Foundation, making it a significant charity event. Sharing this information aims to inform future participants and encourage improvements from organizers.

At Pickle N Pins, AJ couldn’t resist playing a few games of pickleball, even though he’s still recovering from an appendectomy. He also tried Padel for the first time, even teaming up with Drew Brees for a match. Padel is an exciting racket sport that blends the best elements of tennis and squash. Played on an enclosed court about one-third the size of a tennis court, Padel is a fast-paced and strategic game that is easy to pick up but challenging to master.

Pickle N Pins is introducing the first two publicly accessible Padel courts to Metairie, marking Louisiana as the 26th state in the U.S. to embrace this thrilling sport. Drew Brees, seeing the immense potential for Padel in New Orleans, is once again ahead of the curve, much like he was with pickleball.
